Nepal's Political Landscape Witnesses Significant Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
